"Joe Strong and his wings of steel" by Vance Barnum is a novel written in the early 20th century. It follows a daring young circus performer and inventor, Joe Strong, as he attempts to perfect mechanical wings for true birdlike flight while navigating life under the big top, risky aerial feats, and a close friendship-turned-romance with rider Helen Morton. A troubling letter from England tangles his inheritance, pushing him back to the circus, where he boosts the show’s “ginger” with a prank plunge into the tank act and revives his high-wire motor-cycle stunt. The arrival of pretty animal-trainer Miss Tyndall sparks a brief misunderstanding with Helen after Joe rushes Miss Tyndall’s sick dog to a veterinarian, but it’s soon cleared. News from an engineer brings improved wings; an unmanned test succeeds, and Joe’s first flight lifts cleanly before a rudder issue forces a quick water landing. Unhurt, he and his friends recover the machine, fix the fault, and he prepares to try again.
